I am 16 years old and for several weeks over the summer, I mowed the lawn of an elderly lady from the parish.  I was a bit uncomfortable because I really didn’t know what to say, but my Dad urged me to spend a few extra minutes afterwards so she could feed me some cookies.

By this fall, we actually became pretty good friends, and I enjoyed her company.  Strangely though, I really felt she enjoyed me because of this big smile she greeted me with…and sort of excited look on her face.   It made me feel like she was a second grandma.

I am a 45 yr old mother of  3, and my tribe helped me discern that one of my gifts was cooking.  So we all created a plan where I would go to some of the churches in my small town, and get names of people / families who were struggling a bit – maybe from a divorce or finances – and bake something for them.  But when I delivered them, just saying that I was a neighbor in town, I sat down with whoever answered the door, and just chatted.

It was often small talk, but this one time the Mom just broke down and blurted feelings for nearly 30 minutes before I could get a word in.  It didn’t really seem like I said much, but she was visibly “better”.  She just needed an ear that day!   That encounter made all my efforts worth it.  I left with a smile on my face, and warmth in my heart.
